An erratic driver was arrested on DUI charges in Huntington Beach

The Huntington Beach Police Department received multiple calls yesterday about a vehicle swerving dangerously and nearly causing a collision.

The HBPD HB1 police helicopter quickly located the car and observed more erratic driving, prompting officers to respond with lights and sirens.

HB1 maintained visuals until officers arrived and stopped the driver.

After an investigation, the driver was arrested for DUI.

Driving under the influence endangers everyone on the road and comes with serious consequences. A first-time DUI can cost up to $13,500 in fines and penalties and result in a suspended license.

Make the right choice—don’t drink and drive. If you see dangerous driving, report it immediately.

In California, the penalties for erratic driving and a subsequent DUI arrest can be quite severe. Here’s a breakdown of what you might face:

Erratic Driving (Reckless Driving)

Reckless driving in California is defined as driving with a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. The penalties for reckless driving include:

  • Misdemeanor charge: Up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine between $145 and $1,0001.
  • Points on your driving record: Two points, which can lead to increased insurance rates and potential license suspension2.

DUI Arrest

A DUI arrest in California carries its own set of penalties, which can vary based on whether it’s a first offense or if there are prior convictions:

  • First DUI offense:
    • Jail time: Two days to six months.
    • Fines: $390 to $1,000.
    • License suspension: Six months.
    • Probation: Possible.
  • Second DUI offense:
    • Jail time: 96 hours to one year.
    • Fines: $390 to $1,000.
    • License suspension: Two years.
    • Probation: Possible.
  • Third DUI offense:
    • Jail time: 120 days to one year.
    • Fines: $390 to $1,000.
    • License suspension: Three years.
    • Probation: Possible.

Additionally, DUI convictions often require attending DUI school, installing an ignition interlock device (IID), and facing increased insurance rates.
