Man arrested for stabbing a teenager while robbing him in south OC

On Saturday, March 8, 2025, at about 9:56 a.m., Orange County Sheriff deputies assigned to San Clemente Police Services responded to the 100 block of W. Escalones in San Clemente regarding a male who was stabbed.

Upon their arrival, the deputies located a teenage male victim with stab wounds to his abdomen and arm.

The victim was transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An adult male suspect appeared to have stabbed the victim during the commission of a robbery and fled from the scene prior to the arrival of deputies.

The OC Sheriff South Gang Enforcement Team conducted an investigation and located the suspect, identified as Miguel Angel Huertas, 25 years old.

Huertas was taken into custody and booked into the Orange County Jail on attempted murder charges.

In California, stabbing a teenager while robbing them can lead to multiple serious charges:

  1. Robbery: Under California Penal Code § 211, robbery is defined as taking personal property from someone’s possession by force or fear. This is a felony and can result in up to 9 years in state prison, depending on the circumstances.
  2. Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW): Stabbing someone falls under California Penal Code § 245(a)(1), which defines assault with a deadly weapon. This can be charged as a felony, carrying up to 4 years in prison.
  3. Attempted Murder: If the stabbing was intended to kill, charges of attempted murder under Penal Code § 664/187 could apply. This is a felony with severe penalties, including life imprisonment3.
  4. Great Bodily Injury Enhancement: If the victim suffers significant injuries, additional penalties under Penal Code § 12022.7 can be added, leading to extra years in prison.

These charges are very serious and can lead to lengthy prison sentences and substantial fines.
