Beckman coach Marcello Giuliano gets ready to lead the Patriots in a game last season. (FILE PHOTO: Fernando M. Donado, For OC Sports Zone).
Long-time Beckman High School football coach Marcello Giuliano is looking forward to leading the South team in the Orange County All-Star Football Classic presented by Costa Mesa United on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Orange Coast College.
Giuliano led Beckman to a 10-2 record, its best season in school history in 2024. The Patriots won a share of the Lambda League title and advanced into the quarterfinal round of the CIF Division 8 playoffs.
“Being the South coach is clearly an honor; I’m really happy to have the whole staff coaching the game because they have really invested in our program and this is terrific recognition for the work they’ve done over the years,” Giuliano said.
“More than that, though, is that it’s a ton of fun. We have 45 of some of the best players around from a bunch of truly great programs, and the athletes are a blast to coach and be around. Plus, all these kids who have been rivals throughout their playing careers get to become teammates and they’re having a great time together.”
Giuliano said the team has begun preparations.
“In terms of preparation, we only get a hand full of practices, so it’s a crash course in what they’re going to be running in the game,” he said. “We basically have five 90-minute practices to get it all in, so it moves pretty quickly.
“We also tried to tie what we’re doing into some pretty universal concepts that almost everybody runs, so for the players it’s more about learning to work together rather than learning truly new schemes. And the kids are so football-smart and experienced that you kind of explain something once and they have it wired.
“At the end of the day, football in January is awesome, and this is going to be a terrific event.”
The North team will be coached by Zack LaMonda, head coach at El Dorado. Check back for a story on the North.
