Tustin High School’s boys basketball team is off to a 5-1 start, led by Coach Ringo Bossenmeyer, who achieved his 500th career victory Friday night in a 51-35 semifinal round victory over Northwood at the Rancho Alamitos Tournament.
“Getting to 500 wins really means three things; I have been at it for a very long time, and I have been blessed with extraordinary student-athletes to work with along the way and my assistant coaches work ethic and dedication to the values of our program is second to none,” Bossenmeyer said Saturday.
Bossenmeyer is in his 25th year at Tustin and 31st year as a head coach after spending six years as coach at Orange High School.
He’s well respected in the coaching community who always strives to get the most out of his athletes.
“Coach Boss is a living legend,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell. “Something that I have admired since he coached me at Chapman was that he has an unbelievable ability to have his players consistently give their best effort every possession of the game.
“He is a remarkable tactician who pays attention to details and is the best scout out there. I would always warn my new players each year that Boss would know our play calls and then be yelling at his team about what we were going to do. It would scare a lot of our players because they have never faced a coach so intense and who knew all of our play calls. I have so much respect for him as a coach and am glad to call him my friend. Congratulations Coach.”
“He is a great coach and a formidable opponent,” added Irvine Coach Harry Meussner. “Tustin is always really competitive.”
Bossenmeyer is leading his team in the Euclid Extravaganza this week at Garden Grove and Loara.
The Tillers finished second in the Rancho Alamitos Tourney, losing to Irvine 44-32 Saturday night in the championship game.
In Friday’s win over Northwood, Yuri Klines had 18 points and eight rebounds and Brady Kong and Ethan Contreras 10 points each to lead the Tillers. Contreras also had seven assists.
Tustin meets Garden Grove Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Garden Grove.
