In observance of Memorial Day, the City of Irvine is hosting two events that will offer intentional space and time to honor and remember the sacrifice of fallen American service members: the Northwood Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony Sunday, May 26, and the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park Monday, May 27. These ceremonies will commemorate and pay tribute to those who have given their lives while defending the United States.
Northwood Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony — Sunday, May 26, 4 p.m.
This special candle-lighting ceremony will be held at the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial in Northwood Community Park. Guests will be guided through a time of reflection and a remembrance tribute to honor fallen American service members in Afghanistan and Iraq. The ceremony is held in partnership with the Northwood Memorial Committee. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Northwood Community Park is at 4531 Bryan Ave., Irvine.
Memorial Day Ceremony — Monday, May 27, 10 a.m.
The annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held in the Formal Garden at Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park. A Commanding Officer from Irvine’s adopted 2/11 Marine Battalion will speak to recognize fallen service members and their sacrifice. For those wishing to express gratitude to members of Irvine’s adopted 2/11 Marine Battalion, cards will be available to send a message of appreciation and support. Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park is at 4 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine. For better access to the event, please enter the parking lot located on Harvard Avenue at San Juan.
