Godinez High School’s boys basketball team rallied in the third quarter to defeat Segerstrom 56-48 Friday night at Segerstrom in the second match-up between the teams in the Golden West League to remain atop the league standings.

Godinez (18-6, 6-0) came out hot to start the second half and never let up after focusing on crashing the boards and not allowing second chance opportunities. Segerstrom (7-16, 3-3) led by two points heading into halftime but couldn’t stop the Grizzlies late second half push.

“We came in knowing it’s a rivalry game and the best games come out of it. We talked a lot about rebounding in the second half and limiting the second chance opportunities,” said Godinez Coach Robert Morgan.

Godinez was led by Lucas Andaluz, who scored 25 points; Adrian Gonzalez, who had nine points and Jaiden Torres, who had three points.

Andaluz was the go to scorer coming out of half for the Grizzlies, after converting off of turnovers.

“Lucas is our team leader, any time he needs to lead our team he proceeds to step up,” Morgan said.

Segerstom was led by Isaac Camarena and Jerell Guidry with 10 points each. Heber Quero finished the game with nine points.

“We had a good first half, but came out really flat in the third and they went on a big run. We couldn’t really hang on and had to stretch it out and try and foul at the end,” said Segerstrom Coach Eddie Andrade.

In the end, the Godinez players celebrated in front of a big crowd.

“It was a great win for us and we played a really good game coming out in the third quarter. I think it will be a big step forward for us continuing with the rest of our season. We’re gonna go celebrate this win tonight,” said Andaluz.

Both teams have four more league games remaining. Westminster (5-1) is in second place.
