St. Margaret’s Episcopal School officials announced Wednesday seniors Max Ruff and Reed Wainwright have committed to play intercollegiate athletics next year. The two were honored in a ceremony on campus.
“Today we proudly celebrate two outstanding student-athletes,” said St. Margaret’s Director of Athletics Dan O’Shea. “Max Ruff and Reed Wainwright have represented this school as fierce competitors and outstanding leaders at St. Margaret’s. As mentioned in our presentation, only seven percent of all high school athletes are able to continue on in their sport of choice at the collegiate level, but we are equally impressed with their emphasis on the classroom.”
Ruff has committed to study and play football at NCAA Division III The University of Chicago in Chicago, according to O’Shea.
He was a two-year starter at quarterback for the Tartans, recently led St. Margaret’s to a share of the Orange Coast League title while throwing for 2,519 yards and 32 touchdowns in 2023. Ruff was a team captain and 2023 Orange Coast League co-MVP, was also named a first-team all-league member in 2022.
Wainwright, a member of the Tartans’ 2022 CIF-championship volleyball squad, has committed to continue his volleyball and academic career at Stanford University, officials said.
He earned first-Team All-CIF recognition in 2023, CIF Player of the Year honors in 2022 and Orange Coast League MVP honors in 2022 and 2023. Reed also is a member of the basketball program at St. Margaret’s.
