Irvine High School’s football team won its Pacific Hills League opener Friday night defeating Woodbridge 13-9 at University.
The Vaqueros (5-3, 1-0) take on Beckman (7-1, 1-0) Thursday night at Tustin in a showdown for first place at Tustin. Woodbridge (1-7, 0-1) plays University Friday night at Uni. It will be Uni’s home game.

In the win over Woodbridge, Coach Tom Ricci’s Irvine team was led by sophomore quarterback Sina Saferzadeh, who completed 7 of 10 passes for 54 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 38 yards. He connected on a TD pass to Gavin Walker.
Brandon Figueroa rushed for 42 yards on nine carries and scored a TD for the Vaqueros. Deacon Moss had three catches for 33 yards for Irvine.
Thursday’s game with Beckman is expected to determine the league champion with two league games left. Beckman defeated University Friday night.
