ANAHEIM, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2023) — We’re tracking Hurricane Hilary. As of Friday afternoon, here is the latest update and what to expect.
Hilary is now alongside central Mexico and will make its way north along Baja on Saturday and early Sunday.
The hurricane is set to break down as it moves over land and cooler ocean water along our coast.
We could see Hilary arrive in Anaheim as a tropical storm with heavy rain and strong winds peaking Sunday night and into early Monday.
Rain could come as early as Saturday night and through Monday, but, again, the peak is currently forecast for Sunday night.
We could see 2 inches or more of rain, heavy at times, on Sunday. As always, rain can vary by location with east Anaheim likely to see more than other parts of our city.
The most severe forecasts are predicted for areas east of Anaheim, in the mountains, desert and high deserts.
For Anaheim, winds are currently forecast to be strong and peak Sunday night from about 6 p.m. to midnight. We could see winds of 25 mph with shorter gusts up to 60 mph.
Winds mostly will be from the east, similar to a Santa Ana wind. But we’ll also see sporadic wind, including from the west.
East Anaheim is likely to see the strongest wind, with the west also seeing varying winds off the ocean.
City crews have been preparing for the storm and will be on duty through the weekend. Our outreach teams have been and will continue to be out contacting those living in homelessness.
What to do:
* Continue to watch forecasts and updates.
* Follow city of Anaheim on social media for updates.
* Cover and secure things around your home before or by Sunday.
* Stay home during the heaviest rain and wind.
* Throughout the storm, prepare for strong wind and rain while driving or outside.
* Watch for water build up on streets and wind-blown debris.
* Be watchful of trees during peak rain and wind. Should you see an immediate tree concern, call police dispatch at (714) 765-1900 for routing to Public Works.
