Westminster High School football players have been working hard in the off-season in preparation for the season opener on Friday, Aug. 18, according to Coach Steven Anderson.
“Our goal is to bring home the first CIF football title for our school,” Anderson said this week. “Our second goal is to secure a PAC-4 League title in its last year before the re-leaguing occurs.”
Under a proposed plan, most OC football teams would be grouped in conferences for the 2024-26 cycle.
“I hope that our players will continue to embrace the momentum of our improving program and further challenge themselves with our tougher schedule this year,” Anderson said. “My staff has put in incredible work this spring and summer and we have had quality practices because of it. Our players are earning the right to play under the lights and we will be ready to compete this year.”
Westminster has some talented players leading the way.
“We are returning our two All-CIF players in the Cedillo brothers. Ezekiel Cedillo, a senior, is our starting running back and strong safety and has been the team MVP for the past two seasons,” Anderson said. “Ethan Cedillo, a junior, had a breakout year last year as an edge rusher and will now also be featured as a tight end. Both players are incredibly tough and represent Westminster football well.”
Transfer Benny Burns will be the team’s new quarterback, replacing Alex Solano, who graduated, the coach added.
Westminster had a memorable 2022 season, finishing 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big-Four League. The Lions defeated Schurr 33-7 in the opening round of the CIF Division 11 playoffs before losing to Rim of the World 20-13, in the second round.
