Summer Harvest Food 4 Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing healthy and nutritious food to families with children on the free and reduced lunch program at local schools, teamed up with Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim player David Fletcher to host a charity poker tournament in January. The event was a resounding success, raising over $75,000 to help feed hungry kids this year and beyond.
More than 150 poker players and guests attended the event, which featured a special meet and greet with David Fletcher for VIP attendees, as well as access to food and drinks, a silent auction with one-of-a-kind sports memorabilia, and dining and entertainment items.
Summer Harvest Food 4 Kids is grateful to David Fletcher for hosting the event and for being a volunteer at their food distribution events. Because Fletcher grew up locally in Cypress, California, it is personally meaningful for him to give back to his community.
The mission of Summer Harvest Food 4 Kids is to provide healthy and nutritious food to families with children on the free and reduced lunch program at local schools during the summer and winter breaks, when kids do not have access to breakfast and lunch provided by their schools.
Fletcher, who has just concluded playing in the World Baseball Classic for Team Italy said, “It’s a true honor to support worthwhile causes like Summer Harvest Food 4 Kids. I’m so thankful for the community’s support for the event – all the sponsors and people who came out to participate in the tournament. It was a great night of poker play for an organization that’s delivering on its mission right here in our local community.”
The winner of the tournament was Gerardo Lopez of Los Alamitos. The top prize of the tournament is an on-field experience with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim during the 2023 season, along with a custom winners’ TravisMathew jacket. Prizes were awarded to the top five finishers in the poker tournament.
Summer Harvest Food 4 Kids would like to thank all of the event’s sponsors, including: title sponsor David Fletcher, along with TravisMathew, Cypress High School Baseball, Ballengee Group, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Archstone Foundation, Edward Jones, Wendy Gross, and O’Leary Visuals, as well as all of the attendees.
“Summer Harvest Food 4 Kids could not touch all of the lives of our community and reach our goals without generous support,” said Amy Payne, Executive Director, Summer Harvest. “We are grateful to everyone who helped make this event such a success and who continues to support our mission of providing healthy and nutritious food to families in need.”
Long-time Summer Harvest Board Member Daniel Logue noted, “Our partnership with David on the poker tournament has transformed our organization. The funds raised through the event have essentially quadrupled our operating budget since I first started with the organization. This has significantly expanded our ability to provide food to families who need it most in our community.”
The event was such a success, Fletcher and Summer Harvest plan to team-up again in 2024 to host the 3rd Annual poker tournament. Save the date for January 19, 2024 in Seal Beach.
