To help celebrate Orange Coast College’s 75th Anniversary, OCC Pirate Athletics will host three spring sporting events over the next month to help promote the college’s past, present and future and its rich athletic success since 1948.
Pirate Athletics will kick things off on Wednesday, March 22, when OCC softball hosts longtime rival, Golden West, beginning at 2 p.m.
The defending state champion OCC men’s volleyball team will join in on the festivities on Friday, March 31, when the Pirates host Irvine Valley, beginning at 6 p.m.
Lastly, the OCC baseball team will host Irvine Valley on Saturday, April 15, beginning at noon.
All fans in attendance of those three games will receive 75th Anniversary Pirate foam fingers that are in the shape of Pirate hooks.
“It’s such an honor to share in celebrating our college’s 75th Anniversary,” OCC Athletics Director Jason Kehler said. “This school has been such an institution in this community. With nearly 100 state and national championships, our athletics history has greatly kept Orange Coast College at the top of anyone’s choice for a community college.”
A history that began back in 1948, Orange Coast College opened its doors and helped reshape the community’s landscape ever since.
With 97 state and national championships within its 24 men’s and women’s sports, OCC is where champions start—and it’s a message from the Athletics Department that extends to all areas:
- On behalf of student-athletes, we are equipping them to achieve their academic and athletic goals.
- On behalf of OCC, we are fostering a positive, well-rounded student experience.
- On behalf of the community, we are encouraging their sense of pride in OCC in academic and athletic achievements.
The achievement of our athletes is a testament to not only OCC’s extensive student support resources and stellar academic programs but also the dedicated and caring faculty, classified professionals, and administrators, who consistently demonstrate a commitment to student success.
The championship history began in 1956 when the Pirate baseball team captured the school’s first state title. That winning tradition was revisited for the 97th time on Sunday, March 12, when the OCC women’s basketball defeated Butte College to win the 2022-23 state championship.
OCC Athletics is just a portion of the events and happenings throughout the calendar year, as the 75th Anniversary celebration will continue for months. For more information on these future events, go to occpirateathletics.com.
