CIF State basketball tourney includes some OC teams who get a second chance

Orange County high school boys basketball teams who were eliminated in the semifinal round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs and those who lost in the CIF finals get a second chance beginning Tuesday in the regionals of the CIF State Championships.

Teams who advanced to the semifinal round of the CIF playoffs automatically qualified for the regionals.

All the games will be held in host gymnasiums.

First round play for the regionals is on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The second round is Thursday, March 2; semifinals Saturday, March 4 and the regional finals on Tuesday, March 7.

The state finals are Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

Tarbut V’ Torah is among the teams who were eliminated in the semifinals. The Lions (14-8) are seeded 14th in Division V and will open on the road Tuesday against No. 3 Ramona (21-10).

Canyon, which was eliminated in the CIF Division 1 semifinals against Etiwanda, is seeded No. 1 in Division II.

The Comanches (25-6) will open at home against King Drew (15-16) Tuesday night.

Orange Lutheran, which lost to Tesoro in the 2AA final, is seeded third in the Division II bracket and will host No. 14 Stockdale Tuesday night in Division II.

Pacifica Christian, which was eliminated by La Mirada in the 2A semifinals, is on the road Tuesday to face No. 8 Birmingham (20-9) in a Division II opener. The Tritons (23-9) are seeded ninth.

Sage Hill, which lost to Long Beach Jordan in the CIF 4A final, is on the road to face No. 8 Grant (21-10) in a Division IV opener. Sage Hill (15-10) is seeded eighth.

CIF champions Mater Dei and Tesoro are home on Tuesday.

Mater Dei, the Division 1 champion, is seeded No. 5 in Division I. The Monarchs will host No. 13 La Costa Canyon (16-12) Tuesday night. Notre Dame Sherman Oaks is seeded No. 1

Tesoro, the Division 2A champion, is seeded No. 2 in Division II and will host No. 15 Centennial Tuesday night.
