On Feb. 14, 2023, at approximately 9:16 a.m., officers responded to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Harbor Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision between a semi-tractor trailer and a bicyclist, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers located a male bicyclist in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries after being struck by a tractor-trailer. Officers rendered aid until the arrival of Long Beach Fire Department personnel who ultimately determined that the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a tractor pulling a cargo container was traveling eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway when it struck the bicyclist, after the bicyclist fell of his bicycle and landed in the roadway. The tractor continued traveling eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway, possibly heading onto the northbound 710 freeway.
At this time, neither speed nor distracted or impaired driving appear to be a factor in the collision.
The identification of the decedent and notification to the next of kin will be conducted by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.
