Western High School’s football team captured the annual Battle for the Bell game Saturday, defeating Anaheim 62-13 at Western for its fifth straight Orange League title.

Coach Dan Davidson’s Pioneers (8-1, 4-0) won their ninth in a row over Anaheim in their final game before the start of the CIF playoffs next week.

Quarterback Anthony Luna led Western passing for 223 yards and four touchdowns.

Josh Faulkner also stood out for the Pioneers by scoring two touchdowns and Noa Valles Blackwell added a 6-yard touchdown.

Luna threw touchdown passes to Drew Faulkner, Qui’Mare Shemwell, Brycen Faulk and Desmin Joshway Fairley.

“Carlos Peña, Brandon Solloy and Deijon Wheeler played on both sides of the line to seize control of the line of scrimmage,” Davidson said. “Deijon Wheeler wasn’t done there, he also blocked a punt. DeMarkus Lawson had four tackles for losses and an interception. Diego Meza controlled the middle of the field all night never giving up a run of more that 10 yards.”

Anaheim fell to 2-8 overall and 2-3 in league play.

The Pioneers will find out Sunday morning who they face in the CIF playoffs.
