Music’s all-time power couple, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., deliver the songs that have shaped their multi-faceted 40-year career in UP, UP AND AWAY! A MUSICAL FABLE GUEST STARRING THE NEXT DIMENSION at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) on Saturday, October 29 at 8:00 PM. As original members of The 5th Dimension, MARILYN McCOO & BILLY DAVIS, JR. enjoyed acclaim and success with timeless classics such as Wedding Bell Blues; One Less Bell to Answer; Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In; and Up, Up and Away, which won four 1968 Grammy Awards, including “Best Contemporary Single.” In the 1970s, McCoo and Davis left the band to perform as a pair, topping the charts again with Your Love and You Don’t Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show), which won a Grammy for “Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus.” The twosome’s widespread appeal prompted the popular televised Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. Show. Collectively, the couple has delivered 15 Gold and three Platinum records, winning seven Grammys.
Their latest albums include Coming 2 Gether and Blackbird: Lennon-McCartney Icons, which debuted at No. One on the iTunes R&B Album chart. The duo was featured in director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s Oscar-winning Summer of Soul music documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.
McCoo released a string of solo projects in the 1980s, including the single Heart Stop Beating in Time and the albums White Christmas and The Me Nobody Knows. She hosted the widely popular music show Solid Gold and appeared on Night Court and Days of Our Lives. She was also featured in the stage productions Dreamgirls, Showboat, and Man of La Mancha.
The New York Times called Davis an “unvarnished Soul singer.” His song Three Steps from True Love and his 1982 Gospel album Let Me Have a Dream both received wide acclaim. Davis appeared in Dreamgirls and Blues in the Night.
