A proposal to add girls flag football as a CIF varsity sport will be voted upon later this week by the CIF Southern Section Council, Commissioner Rob Wigod said Tuesday in a report covering a number of subjects from the first quarter of the school year.
If the proposal passes, it will be sent to the CIF State Federated Council for consideration at its first meeting on Friday, Oct. 7, Wigod said.
The proposal calls for girls flag football to start in the fall 2023-24 season.
If approved by the CIF council, it would be up to individual school officials to determine if they wanted to field girls flag football teams and which nights the games woule be played.
The games would likely be played in the fall, Wigod said in an interview with OC Sports Zone in August. One option would be to have the games played on the same night as the varsity boys football games, Wigod added.
In order to have CIF playoffs for girls flag football, a certain number of member schools would have to field teams.
“We would need 20 percent of our member schools to field teams in girls flag football and when we reach that threshold, we would be able to conduct a Southern Section championship in that sport,” Wigod said, adding he had heard “mostly positive comments on the proposal.”
