U.S. News and World Report’s latest college rankings has placed Cal State Long Beach as the third best national college in social mobility for helping students from low-income households stay in school and graduate.
“This measurement by U.S. News really comes as no surprise,” said President Jane Close Conoley. “We have been lauded for powering the social mobility of our students, delivering an exceptional educational experience at a low cost, effectively supporting our students through to degree completion, and advancing educational equity. I’m so gratified that The Beach continues to be recognized as a leader in American higher education, earning the confidence of students, their families, and our many alumni and supporters.”
U.S. News uses social mobility as one of its ranking factors in determining its overall best college list because students facing economic hardship are less likely than others to finish college. It is measured by determining how well a school graduates students who receive Pell Grants: funds typically awarded to students in households earning less than $50,000.
Cal State Long Beach was also considered by U.S. News as the top college in the country for student outcomes, placing ahead of Princeton, Harvard, MIT, and two flagship UC campuses. Student outcomes measure a college’s six-year graduation rates, first-year retention rates, graduation rate performance, social mobility, and graduate indebtedness in determining their “outcomes” assessment. The measure figures in to 40 percent of the overall college ranking.
Cal State Long Beach tied at 64 for the best public college nationwide and 137 best national college overall according to the report.
