Following the Supreme Court’s decision to dismantle Roe v. Wade, and Justice Thomas’s written intention to challenge marriage equality, last night a bipartisan group of Congressmembers passed the Respect for Marriage Act. Congresswoman Steel failed to join her California Republican colleagues and instead voted against codifying marriage equality.
Earlier this term Steel voted against the Equality Act which provides federal nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ+ community. Steel was previously criticized for stating she withdrew her daughter from college for supporting gay marriage.
“Tonight Michelle Steel voted against extending basic human rights to members of the LGBTQ community and failed to stand up against discrimination,” said Chen. “While extremely disappointing, this is not surprising. Steel has consistently proven that she can’t be trusted to protect her constituents. In Congress, I will demand respect and equality for everyone regardless of sexuality, gender, race, or religion.”
