The Buena Park Library District will be undergoing an essential plumbing repair and a complete replacement of its heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The plumbing repair will replace a waste line that serves the main restrooms and will improve drainage, reducing toilet and sink backups. The current HVAC system contains mostly original components from the 1969 library building. It is running at a reduced capacity due to equipment failure and is inefficient, resulting in high energy and water usage. It is necessary to proactively complete these projects to avoid a critical failure later.
“We are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment to our visitors and employees. Air temperature, flow, and quality play a key role in both the safety and comfort of our facility. By performing these infrastructure improvements, we will be able to provide a comfortable space for our community to use for many years to come,” said Library Director Helen Medina. “In addition to more reliable sanitation, heating, and cooling, the Library will have increased air filtration, resulting in cleaner air.”
For the safety of visitors, staff, and the construction crew, the Library will be closed for the project, which will involve extensive work throughout the entire 3-story building. The work will be completed in two phases. The first phase will occur this summer, resulting in a building closure from August 8, 2022 until approximately September 12, 2022. The second phase is tentatively scheduled for this upcoming winter and will take approximately 3 weeks. Upon completion of the project, there will be a marked improvement in temperature regulation, efficiency, and operating costs.
The HVAC project is part of the Library’s Capital Improvement Plan. The contract was approved by the Library Board of Trustees in September 2021 and will cost approximately $2 million. The additional waste line repair was approved separately by the Board in February 2022 and will cost approximately $28,000.
