The Antelope Valley’s only Democratic-elected City Councilmember Juan Carrillo won the party’s nomination for California’s newly-drawn 39th Latino Majority Assembly District on Tuesday’s primary election. Carrillo, who immigrated from Mexico to the United States when he was a teenager, worked his way through school as a dishwasher to become a city planner – and, when he wins again in the November general election, an Assemblymember: the epitome of the American Dream.

Carrillo released the following statement in response to the preliminary results from the Tuesday, June 7, primary election:

“I am grateful to the residents of the Antelope and Victor Valleys who believed in and voted for our campaign on Tuesday’s primary election. For far too long, the residents of California’s 39th Assembly District have been overlooked by elected officials. Come November, so long as we continue to build meaningful relationships with people in every corner of the district, the Antelope and Victor Valleys will finally have a representative voice in the Capitol. From improving our education system to increasing affordable housing to combatting the climate crisis, I am ready to hit the ground running and deliver for working families across the High Desert.”
