The CIF Southern Section is proud to announce the top girl’s and boy’s athletic programs during the 2021-2022 school year. This marks the 29th year the CIF-SS has honored schools with the Commissioner’s Cup. It is the first time since the 2018-19 school year in recognizing these schools as COVID interrupted or cancelled all or parts of seasons in all sports during that gap.

On the girl’s side, Foothill/Santa Ana took honors by scoring a total of 15 points. Foothill won championship titles in cheer and lacrosse; took runners-up in tennis; and were semifinalist in water polo.

Oaks Christian took 2nd place with a total of 13 points, with a championship Ɵ tle in basketball; took runners-up in volleyball and soccer; and a semifinalist in softball.

On the boy’s side, Newport Harbor took honors by scoring a total of 22 points. Newport Harbor took championship titles in football, water polo, and volleyball; took runners-up in cheer; and were semifinalists in water polo and wrestling.

Loyola took 2nd place with a total of 21 points, with championship titles in water polo and golf, runners-up in volleyball, swimming/diving, and tennis; and semifinalist in cross country.

This recognition program is based upon comprehensive excellence in the CIF Southern Section athletic competition for both the boys’ and girls’ sports. The Purpose of this event is to enhance the spirit of competition, sportsmanship, and goodwill among student athletes and member schools.

“For the first time since the 2018-2019 school year, we are excited to announce the winners of this year’s Commissioner’s Cup,” stated Commissioner of Athletics Rob Wigod. “This competition involves the entire athletic programs at our member schools and recognizes overall excellence throughout the 2021-2022 school year,” added Wigod. “Congratulations to Foothill High School and Newport Harbor High School for their success this year as our Commissioner’s Cup Champions!”

Winners have been determined by a point system which provides: five points for a divisional championship; three points for a divisional runner up; two points for advancing to the semifinal round or a third-place finish on a team place-finish sport (i.e., cross country, golf, swimming & diving, and track & field); and one point for a fourth-place finish in a team place-finish sport. In cases where a tie occurred, several methods were used to determine the top 10 schools.
