Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish announced the selection of Commander Donald Mauk and Commander Ty Burford to the positions of Deputy Chief effective May 21, 2022. Deputy Chief Mauk will assume command of the Investigations Bureau, while Deputy Chief Burford will be assigned to the Executive Bureau and tasked with developing a structure to support increased community engagement through innovative relationship-based, collaborative policing models.
“Deputy Chief Mauk and Deputy Chief Burford possess unique experiences that represent the vast range of tools necessary to help lead a 21st Century Police Department”, said Chief Hebeish. “They have both worked in a variety of assignments and ranks, while continuously displaying a passion for serving our community. Along with their individual leadership traits, their commitment to our organizational values will serve them well as members of our executive management team.”
“Don has worked several complex assignments within our department, and he is committed to developing internal processes that help meet our department priorities,” said Chief Hebeish. “He has served as a member of many professional organizations and understands the variety of challenges facing the law enforcement profession today.”
“Ty has deep roots in the City of Long Beach and throughout his many assignments, he has maintained essential relationships with many of our local communities,” said Chief Hebeish. “He has served as a high school coach and has mentored several students, some of which have gone on to become Long Beach Police Officers.”
Deputy Chief Donald Mauk began his career with the Long Beach Police Department as a police officer in 1994. He then promoted to Sergeant in 2008, to Lieutenant in 2015 and Commander in 2019. Deputy Chief Mauk has worked a variety of assignments including Patrol, Field Training Officer, Directed Enforcement, Hostage Negotiation Team, Support Bureau Office, and Interim Jail Administrator. As a Lieutenant, he worked Patrol, Gang and Violent Crimes, and Robbery/Homicide. Prior to promoting to Deputy Chief, he was the Commander of the Jail Division, Special Investigations Division, was most recently assigned to the Office of the Chief of Police, where he served as Chief of Staff.
He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from California State University, Fullerton, and is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute. Commander Mauk serves on the Long Beach Police Historical Society and is a board member for the California Police Officers Association, Region X.

I look forward to working with them to continue promoting Chief Hebeish’s vision to reduce violent crime, promote employee wellness, and further improve Department communications.”
Deputy Chief Burford became a police officer in 1996 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2012, Lieutenant in 2017, and Commander in 2020. Deputy Chief Burford held various assignments throughout his career, including Community Policing, Juvenile Investigations, Field Training Officer Program, Recruitment, Internal Affairs, Support Bureau Office, Special Investigations Division, and he has worked in all patrol divisions in multiple ranks. Prior to his ascension to Deputy Chief, he most recently worked as the West Patrol Division Commander.
He is a proud graduate of Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where he currently coaches football focusing on mentorship and student-athlete development. Deputy Chief Burford was also instrumental in the coordination of our first-ever Community Police Academy, which was specially hosted for local area high school athletes. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, USC’s Delinquency Control Institute, and Leadership Long Beach Class of 2013.
