KTTV, Spectrum News 1 win top Southern California TV newscast honors

KTTV, Los Angeles won Best 30 and 60 Minute Television Newscast honors, and Spectrum News 1, Los Angeles won the award for Best Daytime Television Newscast at the 72nd Annual Golden Mike Awards® show.

KNX, Los Angeles won the Golden Mike for Best Radio Newscast Over 15 Minutes, and KFI, Los Angeles won the Golden Mikes for Best Radio Newscast Under 15 Minutes.

In the small market category, KUAN, San Diego won the Golden Mike for Best 60 Minute Newscast, and KESQ, Palm Springs won for Best 30 Minute Newscast. KCLU Thousand Oaks/Santa Barbara won the small market Golden Mike for Best Radio Newscast Under 15 Minutes.

KABC-TV Weathercaster Dallas Raines and KCBS/KCAL Sportscaster Jim Hill were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the May 21st show at the Universal Hilton Hotel in Universal City. It was the organization’s return to a live award show after the pandemic led to a virtual program in 2021.

Raines is the dean of broadcast meteorologists in Southern California, starting at KABC in 1984, and is one of the region’s best known television personalities.

Hill anchors the station’s weeknight sportscasts, and the popular “Sports Central” sports program. He’s received numerous honors, including a star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The RTNA presented its 2022 Broadcast Legend Award to Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Jaime Jarrín. He’s in his 64th and final season as the Spanish-language voice of the Dodgers, and is the longest tenured active announcer in Major League baseball.

The RTNA also saluting the best in broadcast journalism in Southern and Central California. From breaking news to documentaries, awards for outstanding work were given to reporters, videographers, producers, writers, and managers at radio and TV stations from San Diego to Fresno.

The Golden Mike Awards are presented each year by the RTNA, the nonprofit organization representing broadcast news professionals throughout Southern California. RTNA coordinates TV pool coverage of major news events in the region, fights for freedom of information causes, and provides scholarships for the next generation of broadcast journalists.
