The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ) will host its 58th Annual Humanitarian Awards Celebration on Wednesday, May 11 from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. Each year, CCEJ celebrates the contributions of community members who have dedicated their lives and careers to promoting equality and justice in Long Beach and Southern California. This year, the Humanitarian Award will be presented to Rosecarrie Brooks and Gail Meredith, the Gene Lentzner Human Relations Award to Rodney Jones, and the Building Bridges Award to the ABC Unified School District.

In connection with the awards celebration, CCEJ will also host its second convening on racial justice on Friday, May 20 from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm at Long Beach City College.

For the past two years, CCEJ has worked with thousands of people online to delve deep into the roots of racial injustice and identify the actions we can take to transform our communities. This year’s event will feature a panel discussion with leaders in various sectors, racial affinity spaces, and a fireside chat with notable social justice leaders, and workshops on topics like supporting youth in racial justice dialogues, the intersections of gender and racial justice, and cancel culture & accountability.

CCEJ’s Racial Justice Roots Convening will increase participants’ knowledge and skills for anti-racist practices, and help them make connections with one another to build unity and solidarity for racial justice. CCEJ Executive Director Reena Hajat Carroll says, “The Roots Convening is an incredible opportunity to bring our Southern California region together to build community that learns with and from each other in the context of racial equity and transformation.”

Individual tickets to the Humanitarian Awards Celebration are $200 and include admission to the Convening. Tickets to the Convening are $50-100. Registration is now open at https://ccejspring22.eventbrite.com. For more information, phone: (562) 435-8184 or email Geneiva Sweeney at [email protected].
