Taking action to protect Californians from abuse that occurs in a relationship, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has awarded $1.35 million to community-based organizations across the state.
Administered by Cal OES, the grants through the Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Program provide funding to community organizations that help stop violence that occurs in a romantic relationship.
“Cal OES is proud to fund local partners that provide important healthy relationship programs and other efforts aimed at reducing violent incidents in romantic relationships,” said Gina Buccieri-Harrington, Assistant Director of Grants Management at Cal OES. “We hope to help make a difference in the lives of Californians statewide.”
Grantees can use these funds to include, but not limited to:
- Teaching safe relationship skills through healthy relationship programs
- Engaging parents in violence prevention efforts
- Creating protective environments by improving workplace policies and climate
“This grant will help Saahas for Cause become a prevention expert on relationship violence in the South Asian community. It will enable us to reach out to more South Asians in Southern California to do the much-needed prevention work in our community,” said Payal Sawhney, President of Saahas for Cause. “We will also be able to enhance the safety of probable victims or high-risk individuals in society and on school campuses through distribution of safety kits.”
Cal OES worked with the California Department of Public Health and other domestic violence prevention experts statewide to identify gaps in domestic violence, sexual violence, and teen dating violence prevention programs across California. These grants were then awarded to the below organizations through a competitive process:

*Applicants could apply for up to $150,000.
The funding for the grants come from two programs: the Services Training Officers Prosecutors Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program and the Family Violence Prevention and Services/Domestic Violence Shelter and Supportive Services Grant.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, Grants Management Division is responsible for the administration of approximately $1 billion in funds for homeland security, emergency management, public safety, and victim services programs. The majority of these grants are distributed to local and regional entities to enable the most effective prevention, detection, response and recovery efforts to disasters and other threats to communities. Improving and enhancing local agencies’ capabilities through grant funding is one of Cal OES’s most important missions.
